At Trip we use filters to allow users to focus on the data they want. So, users can select to just see systematic reviews, guidelines, controlled trials etc:

A long-time user of Trip approached my today to suggest a Health Economics filter would be really useful. Do you agree?
The user suggested incorporating data from the Ideas/Repec database. A further thought might be to use a search filter/hedge to identify current articles in Trip that qualify as health economic. This is a substantial undertaking so I’m keen to understand if this is a good or bad idea – please take the poll and let me know:

Doctors do not work in a vacuum. Knowing the context of our actions and the impact they will have on health services and the wider social milieu is valuable information. The individual patient’s needs should always come first, but they also need to be balanced by societal needs and addressed in the context of available resources.

There are lots of published economic filters – you can check these out on the ISSG search filter resource (https://sites.google.com/a/york.ac.uk/issg-search-filters-resource/home/economic-evaluations?authuser=0). There is also a performance review of how the filters perform on the same page. Since these are research based and many are derived by using a gold standard, they should be an excellent place to start. As a co-author of some of these filters I am happy to provide further thoughts.

Thanks Julie,
I think we’ll take a stepped approach – tag existing documents already in Trip as ‘health economics’ and if the filter is used to any great extent we’ll extend it to content outside of the main Trip. I dare say the filters will be really helpful. When we get round to it I’ll drop you a line if we need assistance.
Cheers
